Joint research projects are developed through an iterative process whereby faculty researchers and industry practitioners engage in a number of knowledge exchange sessions to match academic scholarship to specific business problems. Potential research ideas are generated in informal sessions when practitioners are on campus participating in student activities or in a more structured way whereby faculty researchers visit with practitioners in their place of business.
In a large, global enterprise technology organization, where technology is used to process massive amounts of data, even small efficiency gains can equate to significant savings for the firm. Researchers have access to vast resources to test theories and methods. Additionally, they have direct access to practitioners to provide feedback on whether solutions designed in the lab will work in the real business environment. Finally, faculty use research to keep curriculum current. Not only is the GET curriculum enriched, but also courses benefit from these collaborative efforts.
